As highlighted by Patty Ferreira, CEO and cofounder of Silvis Materials, a critical issue arises with the use of petroleum-based glue on recyclable items: "Even though you’re putting the container in the recycle bin, it will not get recycled" due to the glue's non-biodegradability.
The Green Alternative: Cellulose-Based Adhesives
Feirreira’s innovative approach began in 2014 with a focus on developing bio-based adhesives. By modifying cellulose, a plant-derived material, she created a fully biodegradable solution that significantly reduces environmental impact. Her method draws on the adhesive qualities of nanocellulose while making it accessible through various plant sources.
With partnerships through the MIT Startup Exchange (STEX), Silvis Materials tests their cellulose adhesives with companies in packaging and construction. Ferreira anticipates that her products could lower production emissions by an impressive 80% and diminish energy consumption to half of that required by fossil-fuel-based options. This promises not just a greener solution but an opportunity for industries to embrace sustainable practices that benefit both business and the planet.
